Caller Wants To Know What Happened To Dallas Twp.’s Motorcycle (2024)

IN REFERENCE TO the police chief in the Back Mountain who is retiring,
possibly you might ask him what happened to the motorcycle that the township
bought on his recommendation. It was supposed to be fixed up to use in
parades? So far I haven’t seen the motorcycle in parades nor have I seen
anywhere where it was sold. I would just like to know, what happened to my
tax-dollar motorcycle?

Editors note: Police Chief Carl Miers said the department purchased a
motorcycle in 1983 or 1984 and used it for patrol for many years. He said it
was sold about six years ago.
I AM WONDERING if Steve Corbett would be man enough to turn in the people
that he bought his marijuana from at State College and testify against them in
court so that they could finally be put in prison. Steve, if you don’t do
this, don’t ever criticize anyone again for breaking the law. You did it and
it’s up to you to solve it. Are you a man enough or aren’t you? Please answer.

Editor’s note: Corbett says, “Believe it or not, I never bought marijuana
at college. Those long-haired Penn State hippies kept giving it to me for
free. I’m also not a rich conservative U.S. senator like Rick Santorum who
wants to imprison poor drug users for doing little more than he did when he
was young and reckless. By the way, I haven’t used illegal drugs in about 20
years and don’t advise anyone to do so. What’s being a man have to do with
this, anyway? Lots of women have the courage to tell the truth.”

I SEE THAT the Kingston police force may be trying to protect Luzerne in
the future. Residents of Luzerne, I would be very afraid if this happens. An
incident that happened in Kingston yesterday where my son-in-law was
threatened and harassed by a person in his own home …

Editor’s note: You went on to make strong claims against a policeman. Call
us with details if you can prove what you say, 829-7242.

I BELIEVE THAT THERE is a federal, regulatory agency which oversees the
activities and licensing of radio and TV stations. They assign frequencies to
prevent interferences, and they regulate many other activities for those who
use the airways. Do you think that this agency could prevent TV stations from
broadcasting commercials at a higher decibel level than the program of which
they are a part? The TV stations in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties say that
they do not provide commercials above the normal decibel rating for the
program – but when my friends and I have a discussion while watching a TV
program – I must use the TV volume control for most commercials. Does anyone
else have this problem? Could it be my TV? Or could it be me?

Editor’s Note: Television stations are regulated by the Federal
Communications Commission. According to Mark Thomas, vice president of WVIA-TV
Channel 44, there is an FCC rule that restricts TV stations from playing
commercials at a higher level than the program volume. Complaints may be filed
with the FCC at 1919 M St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20554, or by calling (202)
418-1000. The FCC’s web site address is www.fcc.gov.

MAYBE THE TIMES LEADER could do an investigative story of why the city and
the game commission condone hunting in the city limits in the city of
Wilkes-Barre. People walk around the dike on South Wilkes-Barre toting rifles
so they could go out there and shoot the water fowl, and apparently that is
condoned. Is the plan to redo the river project the people can still continue
to hunt down there? Gee, I’d like to go down there for a walk. Maybe I will
get shot by a hunter who is shooting at goose. It is probably the same goose
that was chased out of Kirby Park after they hand fed him. I think the city
and the Times Leader ought to look into why hunting is allowed in city limits,
when there are people and pedestrians and people on bicycles. It shouldn’t be
allowed. If there was some black guy out there with a rifle walking down the
dike, I’m sure somebody would stop him.

Editor’s note: It’s doubtful city police or the state game commission would
condone rifle-touting gunners roaming South Wilkes-Barre or racist policy.
Call the cops if the situation occurs again.

I SAW IN YOUR newspaper that members of the arena board get their insurance
paid by the arena. Can you please tell me what kind of insurance this is, what
it costs the taxpayers and the names of the people on the board? Thank you.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Board members are covered by public officers/directors
liability insurance. The liability insurance covers them collectively in the
event the board is sued, according to Andy Long, executive director.

MAYOR HAGGERTY AND THE Kingston council should look back into history some
30 years ago when Kingston took a first-class school system, which rivaled
area prep schools, and formed Wyoming Valley West. Now residents are forced to
send their children to private and parochial schools. Now they’re about to
provide police services to Luzerne. If you live in Kingston, it’s time to get
your security system installed. Didn’t the Wyoming Valley West debacle teach
us anything?

IN RESPONSE TO YOUR article regarding work/family priority, I feel that
these working mothers’ priorities are definitely not their children, who grow
up almost without mommy. These mothers’ main preoccupation is their careers. I
feel compassion for those little boys and girls who spend most or all their
preschool years in a day care or with a nanny. What feeling of self do they
have, and what could be more important than being there for your child?
Nothing.

I THINK IT’S ABOUT TIME Trini and the boys come out of retirement and take
over the courthouse.

YO, YATESVILLE BOROUGH. Pittston City Police Department has a DARE unit, a
narcotics officer, a detective and a juvenile officer, along with some 16
police officers including females. Pittston city responds to more calls in one
day than Laflin borough responds to in two months. Pittston city has a more
experienced, more trained and veteran officers than Laflin would ever dream
of. Are Laflin cops civil servants? I don’t think so. The police chief in
Pittston has more years of service as a police officer than all three officers
of Laflin put together. And Yatesville borough farmed out their police
protection services to Laflin borough for $1,000 more than Pittston city
offered Yatesville borough. Yatesville could have had a Cadillac service
instead of a Chevy service. Who lost in this deal? The people of Yatesville.
I’d like to know who made that decision.

I’M READING THE SAYSO, and I’m thinking that, the year 2001, we’ve gotten
rid of polio, smallpox, we’ve been on the moon, but we can’t get rid of stupid
people.

THIS IS TO LINDA. My sorrow goes out to you. But Rush, your dog’s job right
now is to keep you company until the very end. Find a good home for her that
will take her at that point in time, but her job is to be with you right now,
and you can see it in her face on the front page. Thanks. Bye-bye.

I AM A FORTYSOMETHING-YEAR-OLD single female. I have a master’s degree. I
have been unemployed due to the bankruptcy of my former health care for nearly
one year. I have been interviewed for job after job that ranged in annual
salary from $18,000 to $30,000. This area is and has been in an economic
recession since last year. Just look at the decrease in classified employment
ads and the layoffs locally. So long. I will return here to be buried. I
accepted a job in Philly and had a second offer in Lancaster this week.

HEY, CORRECT ME if I’m wrong. It happened back in November, but before the
election, wasn’t this a robust economy? Wasn’t this a great building, growing
economy? What the heck happened in two months? You turn on the national news
and it’s absolutely nothing but doom and gloom; everything’s down, down, down.
What in the world could have happened so drastic that now all the news is bad?

THIS IS JAN. 5, the day of the snowstorm. Wyoming Valley West school is
left out early on account of the snow, and the coach of the freshmen girls
keeps the girls for practice instead of letting them go home by bus. Now this
leaves the parents to have to go pick the children up after practice by
putting more cars on the road. That was a stupid move. Thank you.

ABOUT THE CONTROVERSY between private school teachers and public school
teachers, I teach in a public school, but I did teach in a private school for
quite a while. I was so underpaid that I would starve to death, and believe it
or not, they actually gave us discounted canned goods if we needed them. I
really enjoyed using my creativity there. I really liked the people and I
really had a lot of fun, but I gotta live too.

I AM CALLING in reference to that Techneglas article, about Techneglas and
union Local 243. I have worked there through two contracts and never have I
received a contract book. …

Editor’s note: The caller is referring to an answer to a SAYSO call. The
president of Local 243 (Glass Molders and Pottery union) said members have not
received a copy of the latest contract book because of printing problems.
President Steve Duda invited anyone who needs information about their layoff
rights to page him at 480-2682. If the caller has other complaints to share
with the newspaper, please call Pam Turfa at 829-7177.

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY congratulations to the new owner of Sickler Bike World,
Mark Farrell. But according to him, I see he enjoys riding his bike among
other places at Frances State Park. I hope he is not utilizing the hiking
trails to ride because the park doesn’t allow any bikes on trails.

YOUR COMMENTS ON PPL not paying enough taxes shows how actually stupid you
are, just like the people who support those clowns in the courthouse. PPL does
not pay taxes. They pay the county and they will pass on the payments to you.
This is like Tom Bigler economics. Tom Bigler on economics is like having
Charlie Brown explain football.

HEY MAYOR, WHERE is the skating rink that was going to be put in Parsons
Park?

I ALSO HAVE BEEN READING SAYSO since its inception, and I don’t ever recall
that one of the chief features of SAYSO was humor. To me it was and is an
exchange of ideas. Occasionally it gets humorous. But the editorial note hit
the nail on the head. Give us something to be funny about. The things that
have been happening lately, especially our property tax raise, doesn’t strike
me as something that one can be humorous about. On the other hand, I don’t
think it is boring either.

KUDOS ON THE EXTENSION in the business page and the Wall Street Journal
supplementals. Whoever was responsible, it is a great addition.

I AM CALLING FROM MOUNT Pocono. We have trouble finding the Times Leader on
Sunday here although we do get it during the week. Would it be possible for
the weekday driver and deliverer to explain to the weekend driver where to put
the papers? You can usually get them either at the Texaco station at 940 just
west of 380 or at Mr. Z’s also on 940. Hope something could be done about
this. It’s a pain in the neck not to have the paper on Sundays.

FROM THE VICIOUS AND NASTY letters coming in about the president-elect from
the Democrats, it is quite evident they would only like a one-party system.
