Curtis Ellison confirmed that he mother passed away last night and herfuneral is being planned for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at New Horizon. There will bevisitation ahead, probably from 12:30 to 2:00 but the visitation hour is not yetconfirmed.
OBIT: Dorothy Iola Stanfield Ellison, age 100 formerly of Sumiton, Alabama diedFridayDecember 9, 2016 at Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing Home in Florence, Alabama. Shewasborn October 5, 1916 in Clay County, Alabama. She was the daughter of WilliamSteadStanfield and Carrie Belle (Dunseith) Standfield. She was a member of the SumitonUnited Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities for nearly sevendecades.She was a graduate from Judson College and held a Master’s Degree from theUniversityof Alabama. She taught at Dora High School for thirty years before she retired in1977, instilling a love of science in many students. She was named “AlabamaTeacher ofthe Year” in 1959. In the same year, she was honored by McCall’s Magazine as oneofthe nation’s top ten teachers.
An avid reader, Mrs. Ellison served on the Alabama Library Services Board. Shechairedthe Carl Elliott Regional Library Board and the Sumiton Public Library Board formanyyears. For her service to the Sumiton Public Library and her community, the townofSumiton proclaimed January 16, 2011 “Dorothy Ellison Day”
Funeral service will be held Tuesday December 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the NewHorizonMemorial Chapel in Dora, Alabama. Rev. Tom Salter and Rev. Mark Adams willofficiate.Burial will follow at Morgan Cemetery. Family will receive friends for visitationfrom12:30 pm until 2:00 pm.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ira Ellison and son, James M.Ellison.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Curtis (Celia) Ellison of Oxford, Ohio; daughters,Anne (Lowry) Hobbs of Mooresville, North Carolina; Jeanne (Dean) Baughman ofFlorence,Alabama; daughter-in-law, Marguerite (James) Ellison; eleven grandchildren andsevengreat grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the SumitonUnited Methodist Church or the Sumiton Public Library.

Geraldine K. Gant, of Dora, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Ridgeview Health Care in Jasper. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 23, at New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home with burial at Day Cemetery in Oakman. Rev. Lee Taylor will officiate. Dr. Myra Gravlee Grady, age 82, of Trussville, formerly a native of Sumiton, AL passed away December 2, 2008. She received a bachelor's degree from Howard College (Samford University) and a master's degree and a doctorate of education degree from the University of Alabama. She taught at Dora High School and Hewitt-Trussville Elementary School.

Virginia Teaford Murray

MURRAY, VIRGINIA TEAFORD, of Dora, passed away on February 15, 2003. She was born September 13, 1912, the first of the late Jacob Grover and Mary Alsup Teaford. She married A. C. Murray, Jr. who preceded her in death. She graduated from Athens College in 1936. She retired from Dora High School after having taught for 32 years. She was a long time member of the Sumiton Methodist Church. Virginia was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, honary teachers society. She was active in the Walker County Homemakers Club, often winning prizes for her quilts and other hand work. She took great pride in her home and yard, constantly caring for her flowers. Two brothers, and one sister predeceased her, Jacob Grover Teaford, Jr., Paul W. Teaford, and Helen Teaford Ling. Survivors include three brothers and one sister, Lloyd and his wife Helen Teaford of Savanah, Harvey and his wife Betty Lois Teaford of Mobile, Fred and his wife Jacqueline Teaford of Birmingham and Betty Jo Teaford of Jacksonville, IL; ten nieces and nephews; 16 great nieces and nephews on whom she lavished her love. Services will be held at Bell Funeral Home, Sumiton Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. Family will receive friends Monday from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. at Bell Funeral Home. Blow former teacher at Dora High School passed away on Saturday December 27th. Mr. Blow was my history teacher in the tenth grade. He was a very good teacher that loved history and took a personal interest in his students. . He began his Teaching career in the Walker County Board of Education at Dora High School and retired from the Jefferson County Board of Education after teaching a combined total of 30 years. He taught at Graysville School, Minor Jr. High School and Edgewater School. He was manager of the Graysville Swim Club for 28 years until it closed. His funeral was December 30th and he was burried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper.

Bonnie H. Minor, 94, of Dora died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Cordova Health Care Center. Her funeral was held on January 7th. Mrs. Minor worked for many years in the lunchroom at Dora High School. Billy Moore, Former Teacher at Dora High Passes Away

Billy J. Moore, 76, of Jasper, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Collins-Burke Chapel with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper.
