The heart of France, that is, the Île-de-France region, was by far the region that concentrated the highest Research and Development (R&D) spending in France in 2021, with over 21 billion euros spent. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes was second in terms of R&D spending that year with 8.4 billion euros, followed by around 6.5 billion euros spent in Occitanie.
