The United States is the leading country worldwide in terms of spending on research and development (R&D), with R&D expenditure exceeding 760 billion purchasing power parity (PPP) U.S. dollars. China is invested about 620 billion U.S. dollars into R&D.

In 2022, the highest share of research and development spending (R&D) was made within the hardware technology producing industry, accounting for a total of nearly 23 percent of the global R&D spending. The health sector and software producers followed in second at nearly 21 percent each.
The automotive sector accounts for 32% of R&D investments, followed by health (19.7%), ICT producers (14.4%) and ICT services (8%). R&D investors are also prominent in sectors such as aerospace, defence, financials, energy, chemicals and construction.
Japan is the most technologically advanced country, followed by the United States and South Korea. Germany and Singapore lead as the most technologically advanced countries in Europe and Asia (excluding the top three globally), respectively.

Is most research funded by the government?
Much scientific research is funded by government grants, private companies, and non-profit organizations. Though funding sources may occasionally introduce bias to scientific research, science has safeguards in place to detect such biases.
