Binet, with the help of physician Theodore Simon, deciphered how to measure IQ based on their work with the French government. They were tasked with trying to understand different levels of intelligence, specifically within children who perform below the average child and could be considered neurodivergent. After trial and error, they created the Binet-Simon test.
To assess a person's IQ, researchers must first test multiple people from the same age grouping to find an average level of intelligence for each group. Researchers collect data from each age group, looking for what at least 70% of participants can do at their age. This testing gives researchers a baseline for what they call mental age. A person's mental age is defined by their level of intelligence compared to others in the same age group. Next, a researcher looks at that person's chronological age, which is represented by a numerical value corresponding to how many years lived.
To calculate IQ, take a person's mental age, divide it by chronological age, and then multiply that number by 100. For example, if a person has a mental age of 12 but is 10 years old, then you'd divide 12 by 10, and multiply that number by 100, which would result in an IQ of 120.

Limitations of the IQ Test
Since each person's score is compared to an average mental age, it's easy to see where reliability issues and limitations occur. With this in mind, is IQ a good measure of intelligence? The average intelligence for an age group is dependent upon the knowledge and skillsets of original participants. This can be taken to mean that if a group has a naturally higher or lower level of intelligence, then it can skew the data for other participants looking to find their intelligence score. It is also important to note where the test is created and who created it, as cultural differences and understandings play a large role in a person's prior knowledge when it comes to using reason to make assumptions.
IQ testing for what is a high IQ only captures a glimpse of reasoning and logic skillsets. It does not account for other types of intelligence.

IQ testing also does not test for multiple intelligences, which means this type of testing only accounts for intelligence that is based on reasoning and problem-solving. This negates other forms of intelligence, which means those without this specific skill set can be seen as less than or categorized as unintelligent. With this in mind, it is important to remember that IQ testing only captures one type of intelligence.
How to Measure Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and express one's emotions while also being able to understand and foster relationships through empathy. Emotional intelligence, or EQ, can determine how people communicate, how they manage stress, their ability to be empathetic, and if/how they resolve conflict. People with high emotional intelligence can process their feelings in a healthy way to guide their choices and foster positive relationships.

Researchers began questioning how to measure emotional intelligence. While IQ testing looks at a person's mental age versus their chronological age, EQ is measured in three ways:
- Self-Report: This test uses questions with I statements that participants will agree or disagree with based on their perception of themselves.
- Other-Report: This test asks others the same type of questions as the self-report, but in this case they are responding based on a person they know.
- Ability Tests: This test acts more like the standard IQ test, as it measures emotional skills based on various question types and average responses.
Like IQ testing, all forms of EQ tests still rely on the responses from others to find an average answer which becomes the test's baseline.
