FDA recalls nearly 30 popular sodas, juices and drinks over harmful ingredients (2024)

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled nearly 30 sodas, juices, and drinks so far his year for containing harmful ingredients.

The regulatory agency has so far had 28 beverage products pulled from shelves with most of them being recalled for drugs, bacteria, or harmful chemicals, which it didn’t identify, according to the Daily Mail.

“A tea sold for pain relief was recalled for containing anti-inflammatory medication that was not included on the label, while apple juice was recalled for containing high levels of arsenic, a toxic metal linked to an increased risk of bladder and skin cancers,” the outlet reported. “These incidents come after multiple soda products and flavorings were also recalled for containing undeclared dangerous food dyes, including one that can cause cancer.”

Products that have been recalled this year include Martinelli’s Apple Juice, Fiji Water, Mug Root Beer, Xlim Express Coffee, Schweppes Zero Sugar Gingerale, Powerade Zero Mixed Berry, Zero Fruit Punch, and Mountain Berry Blast, and The Wiedemann Company’s Tapee Tea, among the more well-known brands.

The largest recall so far has been for Fiji Water, a popular brand that was yanked due to the possible presence of “manganese” and “bacterial genera.”

The Fiji recall affected over 78,000 cases sold online in the “Class III recall,” which designates the “use of, or exposure to, a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.”

“The FDA classification announced yesterday relates to a matter from several months ago that never posed any health or safety risk,” said The Wonderful Company spokesperson Melissa England after the recall. The company owns Fiji Natural Artesian Water.

The Fiji spox added that 99 percent of the nearly 1.9 billion bottles were reclaimed with “remaining stock held in warehouses awaiting return as of May 25,” and that the issue with the water was “confined to products sold through a single distributor,” NBC Chicago reported.

Martinelli’s recalled around 25,000 cases of its premium apple juice for possible elevated levels of inorganic arsenic.

PepsiCo’s Mug Root Beer was recalled due to a labeling error, affecting 2,000 cases of the product that contained Mug Zero Sugar root beer. A pain relief brand of tea was recalled for a medicinal anti-inflammatory ingredient that wasn’t included on the label.

One former FDA and USDA advisor told the Daily Mail that new drinks “can end up going out onto the market very quickly without proper checks being done,” and that there are “more undeclared ingredients making their way into drinks,” as well as more pressure for the FDA to “clamp down” on food and drink manufacturers.

“There are a lot of drinks that have been scrutinized of late and a lot of it has to do with labeling and undeclared ingredients,” said Dr. Detwiler, a food safety expert at Boston’s Northeastern University.

Among other products that have been recalled are drinks from the Charles Boggini Company, Rise Brewing’s Organic Original Oat Milk and Organic Vanilla Oat Milk, Waiakea Hawaiin Volcanic Water, Nordic Naturals Baby’s Vitamin D3 Liquid, Barsotti Organic Carrot Juice, Sammy’s Milk Goat Milk Toddler Formula, and Trader Joe’s 100% Juice Organic Carrot Juice, according to the New York Post.
