The United States Congress has a rare opportunity right now to elevate pilot training as it negotiates the FAA Reauthorization Bill. The rapid pace of technological advancement over the past 20 years in fields like virtual reality, cloud computing, low-latency video communication, and artificial intelligence have opened the door to improving flight simulators while reducing their cost. Full-motion simulators are the gold standard in pilot training - virtually every airline pilot trains to fly their aircraft (Boeing, Airbus, etc.) exclusively in a simulator before flying the real aircraft with passengers onboard, however these high-fidelity simulators are not used extensively as a trainee pilot receives their foundational education from zero to 1,500 hours. Sadly, current regulations only permit 100 hours of simulator time to count toward the 1,500 hour aeronautical experience requirement for an Airline Transport Pilot certificate. Without expanding this arbitrary limit, we are missing out on an incredible opportunity to create even better pilots than came before us. Imagine having the opportunity to fly an FAA-qualified full-motion Level D simulator representative of the aircraft you will fly on the line for hundreds of hours before you ever got in the right seat. On a structured, FAA-approved curriculum, you could practice myriad abnormal and emergency scenarios repeatedly to perfection. You could experience accident scenarios like the Colgan icing / stall tragedy or the Miracle on the Hudson, not just once, but dozens of times. I've been teaching people to fly since I was 18 years old. I fly aerobatics many times each week. I get it - flying real airplanes matters a lot, and trainee pilots (and experienced airline pilots for that matter) should be flying small aircraft regularly. But I'd much rather that the copilot flying me on an airline flight today had hundreds of hours of structured scenario-based training in a simulator than hundreds of monotonous hours watching a student practice touch-and-goes in the VFR traffic pattern. Why hasn't this been possible before? Today's simulators are very expensive - they can cost tens of millions of dollars to acquire and hundreds of dollars per hour to operate. It's simply impractical to use these devices to such an extent. But what if you could produce simulators for a fraction of the cost and they had operating costs of less than $100 per hour? Modern technology makes that possible. We don't need to rely on the simulator technologies of 30 years ago. We don't need huge on-site datacenters with magical cooling systems. We don't need huge hydraulic actuators and 30+ foot high ceilings. We can achieve even higher fidelity simulation at a much lower cost using modern technology.
